A new era begins for Argentina by the election of new president Mauricio Macri on December 10 of 2015, replacing a 12 year dominance period by the Kirchner family. Macri won the presidential election by promising pro-business reforms to promote investment in a still struggling economy. Macri inherited a long standing list of issues that have kept Argentina from reaching its true potential. Among those issues, debt, monetary policy, inflation, and export restrictions. Mauricio Macri seeks to improve foreign relations and open up Argentina to foreign trade.
Mauricio Macri is pro-market and seeks to change the international outlook of Argentina and increase foreign investment. From the very start he has taken the initiative as he traveled to different countries to start the new era of Argentina. Among the list of countries to better relations with are Uruguay, Israel, Mexico, Great Britain, and the United States. The message that Macri wants to get across is that "Argentina wants to have good ties with the entire world. I want to create jobs; I have committed myself to an Argentina with zero poverty. We need investment.” Macri promised business-friendly reforms to spur investment in the struggling economy. In order to fulfill his promise, Macri targeted the United States, Argentina’s third largest trading partner. Macri met with Joe Biden, vice president of the United States to discuss ways to improve their swell relationship between countries. The interaction took place at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, an event where Argentina was absent for 13 years. Among their topics were potential lifts of visa requirements. Joe Biden was very eager to collaborate in all issues, particularly in the areas of innovation, technology, defense, security, and drug trafficking.
Marking another big intervention towards improving international relations is president Obama’s visit to Buenos Aires, Argentina March 23rd to the 24th. The white house has confirmed the visit which soon enough will set anew international relations between the two countries. The two leaders will discuss investment opportunities, renewable energy usage, climate change, and citizenship security.
