Hispanic Enrollment Increases

A major increase is occurring in the enrollment of Hispanics at Universities. According to the censuses bureau between 1993 and 2012, Universities have seen an increase of 1.6 million Hispanic students enrolling. This amount is predicted by analysts to increase as the population of Hispanics increase as well as be affected by the increase of opportunity for minorities. Currently Hispanics make up 9% of students receiving bachelor’s degrees, this seems like a small percentage in total, but is a major increase from the past and has only seen increases throughout the recent years. While this seems that the future for Hispanics will improve, many issues have still arise that can potentially cause barriers for incoming Hispanic students.
This issues consist of states such as Michigan who have passed legislation that they will not be basing admissions based on race or affirmative action. Eight states in total have made this claim and do not consider race in admissions. This presents a problem for Hispanics and minorities, this has led to students to not commit to 4 year universities and in turn decrease the turnout that minorities will receive a bachelor’s degree. Many Americans believe affirmative action is necessary so that opportunities for minorities are available and continue to see an upward trend in graduating for Hispanics, Blacks and Asians. Americans 2 to 1 believe we should keep affirmative action.
Overall the United States has seen an increase in more Hispanic enrollment and graduation. This has help push America in becoming the melting pot of ethnicities it claims to be, but we still have to realize the potential barriers to overcome. Some ways we can overcome these issues is by informing young students about the major impact that they can make. America has seen strides of improvement throughout the years, what we have is an educational revolution as 9 percent of 100 percent is better than zero percent. Minorities are on the rise in the United States but we must represent all facets of jobs and life. Professionals must be represented in the work force as well as the political force. Let’s start a positive revolution and keep affirmative action so we can keep a strong foothold in this education thrust to the future. There will be a time when this will no longer be needed but for now let’s keep the front line strong. A strong nation requires a strong and educated population. We are not defined by our heritage or parent’s origin, but we are made strong like metal when we add all our experiences and tradition to this great nation. So to all future students and current students remember that you are shaping the outcome of what the nation will become.
