Thoughts of a Business Student During the Trump Presidency

The U.S. and Chinese trade war has drew attention, criticism, joy, and frustration from not just business oriented individuals but any politically minded individual nationally and internationally. The 2018 trade war is noted as one of the largest trade influencing policies of all time. President Donald Trump is not the conventional president we are all use to, but does this have to mean he is unfit to be Commander in Chief of the United States? Donald J. Trump is a billionaire business mogul that has charged his way into presidency using his business like approach. This trade topic is just a sample of the political climate and agenda of the Trump administration. I will try to communicate what it is like to be a college business student in today’s social, and economic environments.

Continuous technological innovation has led to easier access to information, enhanced system infrastructure and an overall better quality of life in terms of economic opportunity and convenience for individuals, particularly in the U.S. Through the eyes of anyone this can be somewhat overwhelming but in today’s world understanding these developments are critical. This has made for innovations like crypto-currency, block-chain ledgers, the gig-economy and alike. Being able to utilize these items can provide for vast opportunity to any user. A gig-economy is the economy of temporary work or employment and working on a per-job basis e.g. Uber eats, Uber drive, Lyft and several others.

Along with these economic advancements there has been political and social uproar as a result of the current status of the Trump administration. As always differences in political interests have been present but nothing like there has been during this last election. It seems as if a division of the citizens has led to numerous different controversial events like lobbying of radical interest groups, and protests by civilians. For example, the NFL’s and Presidents position on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem as a form of protest has been a hot topic recently. Situations like this one outline the social climate individuals today live in nationally and internationally.

Through the eyes of a student I feel it is more important now than it ever has been for students to take advantage and be knowledgeable of their country’s resources both domestically and abroad. Just like businesses find a competitive advantage nations can do the same, and being a student in the U.S. it seems like it is the time for innovation, development and opportunity when you look at the current status of the economic environment. Access to these advancements boost entrepreneurship potential, stimulate the economy and make for a healthier economy. Being able to see these benefits are clearer for a business student and give valuable insight to the motives in decision making processes for business, individuals and in this case government entities like the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), and the Trump administration.

Now onto the social environment perspective of a business student. As I mentioned earlier with the NFL player protest example this can be closely compared in terms of business to globalists and anti-globalists, or investing in sustainability projects versus investing in other projects. Observing how these enormous organizations handle controversial situations like this one make you as a business student wonder how you would decide what is best for the company. In my perspective the important factors in evaluating a scenario like this one would be the business laws, contractual agreements and alike for these organizations. Unfortunately unpleasant news like this needs attention and it is up to individuals to decide what they agree with.

These types of headlines have always been present but in view of a historical presidential administration in office I believe an unbiased business perspective is deserved to provide insight and a unique perspective about these events.  It can be traced that economic growth and improvements are a result of the Presidential Administration. I believe it is fascinating seeing the decisions, policies and Presidential responsibility being undertaken by a business man. International trade, economies, and politics all carry great influence and are worth further research and discussion in relation to this article.
